Summary

SailTracker Sailor is a race tracking app for sailors. After a boat has been registered, the app may collect location data, including background location, so it is ready before and during the race and can send tracks to the SailTracker backend.

Logging in connects the app to the correct competition. Device-to-boat linkage happens when a boat is registered. The service is designed to identify a boat, race and device in the event context. The app does not use an email address or phone number in its normal flow, but location data from a device assigned to a boat can still be personal data under applicable law.

Data We Collect

Depending on how you use the app, we may collect:

• Location data
  • Precise foreground location from the device used on board
  • Precise background location from the device used on board, after boat registration and when permissions allow it
• App usage/diagnostic data (limited)
  • Basic device/app information needed for troubleshooting (e.g. app version)
• Sailor login code / boat and device identifiers
  • A 4-digit sailor code is used to authenticate and associate tracks with a boat/race.
  • Boat, race and app-instance identifiers are used to bind uploaded tracks to the correct event context.
  • The app does not ask for email address or phone number.

Why We Collect Data

• To provide core functionality: link a registered boat to the device, prepare event logging, and send GPS tracks to the race system.
• To keep race tracking running when the phone is locked or the app is in the background before and during the relevant race window.
• To improve reliability and support (limited diagnostics).

How Data Is Used & Shared

• Tracks and related identifiers are sent to the SailTracker backend configured by EXPO_PUBLIC_API_BASE_URL.
• Tracks are associated primarily with the boat, race and device/session identifiers used in the event.
• Boat-related state may be prepared before a race becomes active; race tracks are tied to the relevant race when it enters Prep/Started.
• We do not sell personal data.
• Data may be accessible to race organizers and authorized administrators operating the SailTracker system, and may be shown in race views where event tracking is expected.

Data Storage & Retention

• The app may temporarily store unsent tracks locally on your device to handle offline scenarios.
• Backend retention depends on race/organizer policies.

Your Choices

• You can stop tracking at any time in the app. When tracking is stopped, SailTracker should stop collecting background location for race tracking.
• You can revoke location permissions in your device settings.
• Background location is necessary for reliable preparation and continuous race tracking while the phone is locked or the app is not in the foreground.
